A bride in Accra has three main choices for her white wedding gown: buy one, rent one, or have one made. Many visit shops for all three before deciding.

Renting

Renting is common in Ghana and Nigeria. Bridal shops keep a stock of gowns that brides can hire for the day, often with alterations included.

Advantages: Renting costs much less than buying a similar gown. The bride can wear a dress that would be too expensive to buy, and she does not have to store it afterwards.

Things to check: Ask how many times the gown has been worn and inspect it for stains, tears and yellowing. Confirm what alterations are allowed, the pick-up and return dates, the deposit and the penalty for damage. Get everything in writing.

Buying

Brides can buy gowns from bridal boutiques, online stores or abroad.

Advantages: The gown is new, fits her exactly after alterations and is hers to keep, pass on or sell.

Things to check: Online purchases may not match photos, and returns from abroad are difficult. Allow time for delivery and alterations, and budget for customs duties if importing.

Having it made

Local designers in Accra and Lagos make custom gowns, often with African fabrics, lace or kente details.

Advantages: The gown is unique, designed for the bride’s body, style and culture.

Things to check: Look at the designer’s previous work, agree on a detailed design and price, set fitting dates and a delivery date well before the wedding. Pay in stages rather than all at once.

Timing

Whatever the choice, start early. Custom gowns can take two to four months, and even rentals need fittings and alterations. Book at least one final fitting a week or two before the wedding, wearing the actual shoes and underwear.

Second outfits

Many West African brides change outfits during the reception, from a white gown to a traditional outfit or a lighter dress for dancing. Budget for this too.

Cost comparison

As a rough guide, renting is usually the cheapest option, a custom local design falls in the middle, and imported designer gowns cost the most. Prices vary widely by designer and fabric.

No guest will ask whether the gown was rented. What they remember is whether the bride looked like herself and was comfortable enough to dance.
