She tried on eleven gowns and loved none of them. On the twelfth, her mother started crying. Many brides describe a moment when they know they have found the dress, but getting there can be stressful. A little planning makes gown shopping more enjoyable.

When to start

Start looking six to nine months before the wedding if you are buying from a shop or ordering online, and earlier for custom-made gowns. Alterations and fittings take time.

Set a budget

Decide your budget before you start, and tell the shop or designer. Remember to include alterations, veil, shoes, undergarments and accessories.

Who to bring

Bring one to three people whose opinions you trust and who know your taste. Too many voices can make decisions harder.

Buy, rent or custom

In Ghana and Nigeria, brides choose between buying ready-made gowns, renting, or having a designer create one. Custom gowns allow personalisation but require trust and time. Renting can save money.

Know your style

Collect pictures of gowns you like, but stay open to trying different shapes. Many brides end up choosing a style they did not expect.

Consider the venue and weather

A heavy gown can be uncomfortable in a hot church or outdoor venue. Consider the climate and how long you will wear it.

Questions to ask designers

Ask how many fittings are included, what happens if the gown is late or does not fit, whether a deposit is refundable and when final payment is due. Get everything in writing.

Comfort

Walk, sit and lift your arms in the gown. You need to move, dance and eat.

Second outfit

Many brides change into a second outfit for the reception. Plan both outfits together.

Avoid last-minute changes

Once you choose, stop looking at other gowns. Constant comparison leads to doubt.

Trying gowns on

Wear suitable underwear and bring shoes with a similar heel height to the ones you plan to wear. Take photos to compare later, if the shop allows it.

Local designers

Ghana and Nigeria have many talented bridal designers. Look at their past work, read reviews and visit their studios before committing.

The right gown will make you feel like yourself on your best day. If it does that, the label and the price matter far less than the photos will suggest.
