Many Ghanaian couples start married life in debt because of their wedding. It does not have to be that way. A few smart decisions can save a large share of the budget.

1. Trim the guest list

Every extra guest adds food, drinks, chairs, souvenirs and space. Agree a firm number with both families early. A smaller list is the biggest single saving.

2. Combine ceremonies

Some couples hold the traditional ceremony and the church wedding on the same weekend, or even the same day, saving on venues, decor and travel for guests.

3. Choose the date carefully

December and Easter weekends are the most expensive and busiest. Vendors may offer better prices at other times of the year or on weekdays.

4. Book one venue

Holding the church service and reception at the same place, or close together, saves on transport and decor.

5. Share decor

If your church holds several weddings on the same day, ask whether couples can share flowers and decor.

6. Limit outfit changes

Each outfit change costs money for fabric, sewing, hair and accessories. One or two looks can be enough.

7. Rent instead of buy

Rent the wedding gown, suits or decor items where possible.

8. Simplify the menu

Offer fewer dishes, cooked well. Buffets can reduce waste compared with multiple courses, depending on the caterer.

9. Go digital

Digital invitations and programmes save printing costs.

10. Rethink souvenirs

Souvenirs add up quickly. Choose one useful item or skip them.

11. Compare quotes

Get at least three quotes for major services and compare what each includes.

12. Ask for help

Friends with skills in photography, decor, music or baking may offer their services as gifts.

Track every cedi

Write down every payment and every promise. Small costs such as fuel, snacks for helpers and last-minute printing add up quickly, and a simple record stops the budget from drifting.

What not to cut

Do not cut costs on food safety, a reliable photographer or a clear written contract. These are the things couples regret most when they go wrong.

The first year matters more

The money saved on the wedding can pay rent, furnish a home or start a business. Couples who planned a modest wedding rarely regret it once the bills of married life begin.
