A bride in Accra orders a bouquet of pale imported roses. By the time the photos are taken at noon, the petals are drooping. In West African heat, flower choice matters.
Heat and humidity
High temperatures and humidity make many flowers wilt quickly, especially delicate imported varieties. Outdoor ceremonies and receptions without air conditioning are especially hard on flowers.
Flowers that cope better
Orchids. Many orchid varieties are tropical and hold up well, adding elegance.
Anthuriums. Glossy, heart-shaped blooms in red, pink and white that last for days.
Heliconias and bird of paradise. Bold tropical flowers that suit colourful decor.
Proteas. Sturdy flowers from southern Africa with a dramatic look.
Chrysanthemums and carnations. Hardy and long-lasting.
Greenery. Tropical leaves, such as palm fronds and monstera, add texture and survive well.
Local flowers
Using locally grown flowers and greenery reduces cost and travel time, and blooms arrive fresher. Ask florists what is in season.
Care on the day
Keep flowers in water and in the shade until the last moment. Florists can wrap bouquet stems in damp material. Mist flowers lightly with water. Keep centrepieces out of direct sunlight, and schedule outdoor photos early in the day or in late afternoon.
Artificial flowers
High-quality artificial flowers are popular for decor and even bouquets in hot climates. They do not wilt, can be prepared in advance and can be kept as mementos. The best ones look convincing in photos.
Mix and match
Some couples use real flowers for the bride’s bouquet and high table, and artificial flowers for large installations, arches and backdrops.
Bouquet size
A large, heavy bouquet can be tiring to carry in heat, especially through a long church service and photo session. Consider a smaller, lighter bouquet, and give the bride a place to rest it during the ceremony. Bridesmaids’ bouquets can be even simpler.
Boutonnieres and corsages
Flowers worn on jackets and wrists are especially vulnerable. Choose sturdy blooms or fabric flowers, and attach them just before photos.
Colours
Choose flowers that match your wedding colours. Bright tropical blooms work well with African prints and kente.
Budget
Imported flowers are expensive, and delays can occur. Discuss budget and alternatives with your florist early.
The best wedding flowers are the ones still standing when the last photo is taken. In Accra and Lagos, that often means choosing blooms that already know the heat.
