By the end of the reception, the curls had fallen and the edges were frizzy. Many brides in Accra, Lagos and other West African cities know the feeling. Heat and humidity are hard on hair, and wedding days are long. Choosing the right style and preparing well can keep your hair looking good from the first photo to the last dance.

Choose styles that hold

Updos, sleek buns, braided styles and well-secured wigs usually last better than loose curls in humid weather. Loose styles can work if they are set properly and finished with suitable products.

Natural hair

Natural hair can look stunning on a wedding day, but humidity can cause shrinkage. Styles such as twist-outs, braided updos and defined buns hold better. Work with a stylist experienced with natural hair.

Relaxed hair

Relax or treat hair at least two weeks before the wedding, not the week of, to avoid irritation and breakage.

Wigs and units

Many brides wear wigs or units because they hold styles well. Make sure the unit is properly installed, breathable and comfortable for long hours.

Book a trial

Do a trial with your stylist, ideally on a warm day, and wear the style for several hours to see how it holds.

Products

Use humidity-resistant products, edge control and setting sprays. Avoid heavy oils that can make hair limp.

Veils and accessories

Consider how veils, pins, crowns or headwraps will attach and how they affect your style.

Outdoor ceremonies

For outdoor events, plan for wind and sun. Shade and fans help.

Touch-up kit

Ask a bridesmaid to carry pins, edge control, a comb, hairspray and a small fan.

The second look

Many brides change hairstyles with their second outfit, for example adding a headwrap for the reception. Plan the change in advance.

Book your stylist early

Good bridal stylists are booked months ahead, especially in December.

Protect your hair before the day

Deep condition and trim your hair in the weeks before the wedding.

Sleep and water

Drink plenty of water and rest well before the wedding. Healthy hair and skin start with your body, and tired brides often notice it in photos.

The weather will not cooperate just because it is your wedding. Planning for heat is the best way to make sure your hair still looks like you planned when the photographer asks for one more picture.
