Since oil production began off the Western Region in 2010, Sekondi-Takoradi has grown fast. New hotels, restaurants and event venues have opened, and more couples now choose to marry there rather than travelling to Accra. For families from the Western Region, a wedding in Takoradi also means celebrating close to home.

The twin city and its beaches

Sekondi and Takoradi together form the capital of the Western Region. Takoradi is known for its harbour and as a base for the oil and gas industry, while Sekondi is the older administrative centre. Hotels in Takoradi host receptions, and there are event centres and gardens across the city. Book early, as some venues are popular with corporate events.

Beaches near Takoradi, as well as resorts at Busua and other coastal towns west of the city, offer beautiful settings for ceremonies and photographs.

Traditional ceremonies and accommodation

Fante, Ahanta and Nzema traditions are strong in the region. Couples often hold the traditional marriage in the bride’s hometown according to local customs. The drive from Accra takes several hours, depending on traffic. Some guests fly to Takoradi Airport. Share travel advice and accommodation options early. Hotels can fill up during busy periods. Consider booking room blocks for close family.

Vendors, food and weather

Takoradi has a growing number of local vendors, including caterers, decorators and photographers. Some couples bring vendors from Accra, which adds transport costs. Local dishes such as fante kenkey, fresh fish and seafood can make a reception menu distinctive. The Western Region is one of Ghana’s wettest areas. Plan for rain with tents or indoor backups.

The coastline, forts and old buildings of Sekondi offer interesting backdrops. Some services may cost less than in Accra, though prices have risen with the oil economy.

Forts and church weddings

The Western Region coast is dotted with old European forts, including those at Sekondi, Shama and Dixcove. Couples sometimes include short visits to these sites in pre-wedding shoots, though they should be approached with respect for their history. Takoradi has many large churches, and booking the church early is as important as booking the reception venue.

Takoradi has become a city of oil workers and new money. For many families, it is also simply home, and a wedding there feels right in a way no Accra venue could match.
