The hills around Ho rise green behind the city, and on a clear day the views from the higher ground stretch across the Volta Region. For Ewe families, a wedding at home in the Volta means celebrating with relatives, chiefs and the traditions they grew up with. Ho has grown into a regional centre with hotels, event spaces and vendors, making it easier for couples to marry there rather than in Accra.
Ho and Ewe customs
Ho is the capital of the Volta Region and home to the University of Health and Allied Sciences and the Ho Technical University. Its growth has brought more hotels and restaurants. Most families in Ho are Ewe. Ewe traditional marriages include the knocking, the presentation of drinks and items, and prayers and blessings from elders.
Hotels in Ho host receptions, and churches and community halls are used for ceremonies. Garden venues offer views of the surrounding hills.

Photos, guests and vendors
The Volta Region is one of Ghana’s most scenic areas. Couples travel to places such as Wli waterfalls, Mount Afadja and the hills around Amedzofe for pre-wedding photos. The drive from Accra takes a few hours. Share directions and accommodation suggestions early. Ho has local caterers, decorators and photographers. Some couples bring vendors from Accra for specific services.
Local dishes such as akple and fetri detsi, okro soup, can feature on the menu. Agbadza and borborbor are popular at Ewe celebrations, getting guests on their feet. The Volta Region has its own kente tradition, with weaving centres such as Agotime. Ewe kente patterns are a beautiful choice for wedding attire.
Weather, costs and family
Plan for rain during the rainy season and for heat in the dry season. Some services may cost less than in Accra, though travel costs for imported vendors add up. Ho has many Catholic, Presbyterian (EP Church) and Pentecostal congregations, and booking the church early is as important as booking the reception venue. Speak to both families early about expectations, budgets and who will host which part of the celebrations. Clear agreements made months ahead prevent arguments in the final weeks.
Many Ewe families live in Accra but call the Volta home. A wedding in Ho lets them celebrate where the drums, the hills and the elders all feel familiar.
