The guests have gone home. The photos are coming. The gifts are unpacked. Now the real work begins: living together, every day, as a married couple.

The first year of marriage is full of adjustments. Here are ten lessons many couples wish they had known.

1. Expect adjustment

Even couples who dated for years find that marriage feels different. Routines, habits and expectations collide. Patience helps.

2. Talk about money early

Agree how you will handle income, bills, savings and support for extended family. Money disagreements are a common source of conflict.

3. Set boundaries with family

Parents and relatives mean well, but a new household needs space to make its own decisions. Agree together how to respond to family requests.

4. Share the chores

Divide household work fairly and discuss expectations openly, rather than assuming.

5. Keep dating

Make time for each other outside routine: a meal out, a walk, a weekend away.

6. Fight fairly

Disagreements are normal. Avoid insults, bringing up old issues or involving outsiders too quickly. Deal with the issue, not the person.

7. Pray or reflect together

For couples of faith, shared prayer and worship can strengthen the relationship.

8. Plan your future

Talk about children, careers, where you will live and long-term goals. Plans change, but talking about them keeps you on the same page.

9. Protect your privacy

Be careful about sharing marital problems on social media or with too many people. Choose one or two wise, trusted people to confide in, and let the rest of the world see only what you both agree to share.

10. Seek help early

Counsellors, pastors and trusted mentors can help when problems arise. Asking for help is a sign of commitment, not failure.

Friends and old routines

Friendships change after marriage. Old routines, such as long nights out with friends, may need adjusting. Keep friends, but talk openly with your spouse about time spent apart.

Health and rest

The months before a wedding are exhausting. Many couples enter marriage tired and in debt. Rest, eat well and look after your health together; it affects your mood and your patience with each other.

The anniversary

Couples who reach their first anniversary often say it was harder and better than they expected. The wedding day was about celebration; the first year is about learning how to be a team.
