A year after the wedding, the photos have arrived, the thank-you notes are sent and married life has settled into routine. The first anniversary is a chance to pause and celebrate what you have built. It does not need to be expensive, but it should be thoughtful.

Paper gifts, letters and special places

Traditionally, the first anniversary is associated with paper, symbolising a blank page and a new beginning. Paper gifts can include letters, books, framed photos, concert tickets or a printed wedding album. Write each other letters about the past year: what you have learned, what you are grateful for and what you hope for next. Watch your wedding video, look through photos or play your wedding playlist. Some couples eat a preserved piece of wedding cake, a tradition in some countries.

Visit the place where you met, got engaged or married. Recreating a memory can be meaningful.

Trips, dinners and thanking family

A weekend away, even close to home, gives couples time to rest and reconnect. In Ghana, places such as Aburi, the Volta Region or a beach resort are popular. In Nigeria, couples might choose a resort outside the city. Cook together or book a restaurant. Dress up as you would for a date. Talk about goals for the year ahead: savings, career, family, travel or a home.

Some couples call or visit parents and those who supported them during the wedding. Some couples mark the day by donating or volunteering together. Take an anniversary photo each year. Over time, the collection becomes a record of your marriage.

Keeping it personal and renewing promises

There is no right way to celebrate. Choose something that reflects your relationship. Some couples read their wedding vows to each other on their anniversary, reflecting on how they have kept them. A small dinner with the friends and family who supported you through the wedding can be a joyful way to mark the day, especially if you were too busy to enjoy their company at the wedding itself.

The first year of marriage often goes faster than couples expect. Marking the anniversary is a way of noticing how far you have come together.
