The garden looked perfect in the brochure: green lawns, palm trees and a sunset backdrop. But the wedding was in June, and the couple had not thought about the rain. Choosing between an indoor hall and an outdoor garden is one of the first big decisions in wedding planning, and in West Africa’s climate, it can shape everything that follows.

Weather, tents and atmosphere

Outdoor venues depend on the weather. In Ghana and Nigeria, the rainy seasons bring sudden heavy downpours, while the dry season brings heat and dust. Indoor halls protect guests from both. Many garden weddings use tents or canopies. Factor in the cost of tents, flooring and lighting. Gardens offer natural beauty and space, ideal for photographs. Halls can be transformed with decor and lighting into any style you want.

Large halls can hold hundreds of guests comfortably with fans or air conditioning. Gardens can also host large crowds, but guests may be spread out.

Cost, sound and guest comfort

Compare total costs, including decor, tents, generators, toilets and security. A cheaper garden can become expensive once these are added. Indoor halls can echo, while outdoor venues may have noise restrictions. Ask about rules and sound equipment. Check power supply and backup generators for both types of venue. Elderly guests may prefer indoor venues with air conditioning and nearby toilets.

Garden weddings work well in the late afternoon and evening, when temperatures drop. Some couples hold the ceremony in a garden and the reception indoors. Visit the venue at the same time of day as your event to check light, heat and traffic.

Backup plans, parking and toilets

For outdoor weddings, confirm a rain plan in your contract. Check how many cars the venue can hold and whether guests will need to park on the street. Large Ghanaian and Nigerian weddings bring many vehicles. Outdoor venues may need mobile toilets for large guest lists, which adds to the cost. A bare hall may need more decoration than a garden that is already beautiful.

Speak to couples who have used the venue about their experience. A hall and a garden can both host a beautiful wedding. The better choice is usually the one that still works when the weather does not cooperate.
