A garden wedding in Accra can look perfect in photos. Then a storm rolls in from the sea, and forty minutes later the lawn is a swamp. Couples who plan for rain do not need to panic.

Know the seasons

Southern Ghana has two rainy seasons: the main one from about April to July, with heavy downpours in May and June, and a shorter one around September to November. Southern Nigeria has a long rainy season from roughly March to October. Weather varies from year to year, but these months carry the greatest risk.

Choose the venue carefully

Ask venues where the water goes when it rains. Some lawns drain quickly; others flood. Visit after a rainstorm if possible. Check access roads, since some venues become difficult to reach in heavy rain.

Canopies and tents

Canopies are standard at West African events for sun and rain. For a rainy season wedding, book enough canopies to cover all guests, food and the stage as well as the high table. Ask for sidewalls in case of wind-driven rain. Make sure they are anchored properly.

Flooring

Consider raised flooring or carpet for the dance floor and the main areas. Mud ruins shoes and gowns and can be dangerous.

A backup indoor space

Ask whether the venue has an indoor hall that can be booked as a backup, and what it costs. Some venues offer this at a reduced fee if you confirm a set time before the event.

Timing

In many coastal areas, storms often come in the afternoon or evening. A morning ceremony may reduce the risk. Watch the forecast in the days before, and agree on a time to make the final decision.

Electricity

Rain and power do not mix. Make sure the sound system, lighting and generator are covered and cables are safe. Ask your DJ and lighting team about their wet weather plans.

Guests

Mention on your invitation or in messages that the event is outdoors. Have umbrellas available at the entrance, and ask ushers to help older guests.

The bride

Keep a pair of flat shoes, a shawl and a small umbrella for the bride. A long train may need to be pinned up if the ground is wet.

Photos in the rain

Some of the most beautiful wedding photos are taken in the rain, under clear umbrellas or on covered verandas. A good photographer will make the most of it.

Many West Africans say rain on a wedding day brings blessings. With a plan in place, the couple can agree without worrying.
