At a Ghanaian traditional wedding, you can often tell who belongs to which family at a glance. The bride’s relatives wear one fabric, the groom’s another, or both families wear the same cloth in a show of unity.

Choosing that family cloth is one of the first decisions couples and families make, and one of the most debated.

Why a family cloth

The cloth identifies family members, makes photographs look coordinated and shows support for the couple. Buying and sewing the cloth is also a way for relatives and friends to take part in the celebration.

Colour

Many couples choose colours that match the wedding’s theme or the bride’s outfit. Some families have preferences for particular colours for joyful occasions. Avoid colours associated with mourning in your community, such as black and red for many Akan families.

Pattern and fabric

Popular choices include wax print, lace and, for the couple and close family, kente. Wax print is affordable and comes in endless patterns. Lace and kente cost more and suit smaller groups.

Check that the pattern looks good in photographs and does not clash with the decor.

Quality

Buy from a reputable seller. Cheap imitation fabric can fade or bleed when washed. Ask for samples and check the feel and colour in daylight.

Quantity

Estimate how many yards are needed per person and how many people will buy the cloth. Buy extra for late buyers and for sewing mistakes.

Money

Families usually sell the cloth to relatives and friends. Decide in advance whether the cloth is sold at cost or at a small profit to help with expenses, and appoint one trusted person to handle sales and records.

Sewing

Give relatives enough time to get outfits sewn, especially during busy seasons when tailors are overloaded. Share style ideas if you want a coordinated look.

Family politics

Aunties may have strong opinions. Involve key family members early, present a few options and let them feel heard.

Accessories

Some families add a matching accessory, such as a head wrap, bead necklace or scarf, for guests who cannot afford the full cloth. It keeps everyone included in the family look.

The photographs last

Years later, the wedding photographs will show rows of relatives in the same fabric. Choose a cloth you will be happy to see on every wall of the family house.
