The venue manager quoted one price for Saturday and a much lower one for Thursday. For couples watching their budget, that gap can be tempting. Weekday weddings are still uncommon in Ghana and Nigeria, where Saturdays dominate, but more couples are considering them.

Why Saturdays cost more

Most couples want Saturday because guests are free and church weddings are usually held then. Venues, caterers, decorators, photographers and DJs can charge more for peak days, especially in December and holiday periods.

The savings

Many venues and vendors offer discounts for Fridays or midweek days. Some will negotiate packages. The saving can be significant, allowing couples to spend more on food, photography or their honeymoon.

Better vendors

Popular vendors are often fully booked on Saturdays. A weekday date may let you hire your first-choice photographer or planner who would otherwise be unavailable.

Guest attendance

The biggest trade-off is attendance. Some guests cannot take time off work. If having a large crowd is important to you or your families, a weekday wedding may disappoint.

Smaller weddings

For couples who want a smaller, more intimate wedding, a weekday can help naturally limit numbers to people who make a real effort to attend.

Friday evenings

A Friday evening reception can feel like a weekend celebration while still offering lower prices. Guests can attend after work, and the party can run late without worrying about Sunday church.

Traffic

In Accra and Lagos, weekday traffic can be heavy, especially in the evening. Choose venues and times that avoid rush hour, or give guests clear travel advice.

Church rules

Check whether your church holds weddings on weekdays. Some churches have limited availability or specific days for weddings.

Give notice

Send save-the-dates early so guests can request leave. Diaspora guests may actually prefer a weekday wedding, as flights and hotels can be cheaper.

Daytime ceremonies

Some couples hold a registry or church ceremony on a weekday with close family, then host a larger celebration at the weekend. This splits costs and gives guests options.

Vendor availability

Ask vendors directly about weekday rates. Some may not advertise them but will offer discounts when asked.

A weekday wedding will not suit every family. For couples who care more about the marriage than the crowd, it can turn the same budget into a better day.
