The final fitting is a week away when the bride realises the gown no longer fits. Or the zip breaks an hour before the ceremony. Or a drop of stew lands on the bodice at the reception. Dress emergencies happen, and they feel enormous in the moment. Most of them can be fixed with preparation, calm and the right people on hand.

Fittings and fit problems

Schedule your final fitting a few weeks before the wedding, with time for adjustments. Weight can change during wedding planning. Keep your dressmaker’s or bridal shop’s number handy, and ask whether they can help on the day if needed. A skilled seamstress can let out seams if there is extra fabric. Corset backs can also add flexibility.

Gowns can be taken in, and temporary fixes such as safety pins or tape can hold things in place. A broken zip can be sewn shut temporarily or replaced with lacing by an experienced seamstress.

Hems, stains and the emergency kit

Hem tape, safety pins or quick stitching can fix torn hems in minutes. Blot stains gently with a clean cloth and water. Avoid rubbing. Stain pens and white chalk can hide marks for photos. Pack a kit with needles, thread in matching colours, safety pins, fashion tape, stain remover, scissors and a small towel. Many West African brides change outfits during the reception, so a second dress can act as a backup if needed.

In hot weather, stay cool and use breathable fabrics where possible. Ask a bridesmaid or family member to carry the kit and help with fixes.

After the wedding and rentals

Have the dress professionally cleaned soon after the wedding to prevent stains from setting. Guests rarely notice small problems. Focus on enjoying the day. If you are renting a gown, ask the shop about its policy on alterations and damage before the wedding. Some rental shops include minor adjustments in the fee, while others charge for any changes or repairs.

A handheld steamer removes creases quickly on the morning of the wedding. Very few brides get through the day without some small problem with the dress. The ones who stay calm usually find nobody in the photos can tell.
