Couples often start planning with a total figure in mind and are shocked when the quotes arrive. The key to a realistic budget is understanding which categories cost the most and deciding early where to spend and where to save. Every wedding is different, but most budgets follow a similar pattern.
Venue, catering and attire
Food and venue are usually the largest costs, often taking a big share of the budget. In Ghana and Nigeria, where guest lists are large, catering can be the single biggest item. Reducing the guest list is the most effective way to save. The traditional ceremony has its own costs: the list of items, drinks, attire and food for guests. Some couples spend as much on the traditional marriage as on the white wedding.
The bride’s gown, the groom’s suit, traditional outfits and accessories add up. Rentals and simpler designs can reduce costs.

Photography, decor and the rest
Photography and videography often take a significant portion of the budget. Many couples consider it worth the investment because the photos last. Decor can range from simple to extravagant. Agree on a clear brief with your decorator and set a limit. DJs, live bands, MCs and cultural troupes all cost money. Choose what suits your style and budget.
Drinks, including soft drinks and alcohol, can be expensive for large guest lists. Invitations, programmes and souvenirs are smaller costs but can grow if you choose elaborate options. Bridal cars, buses for guests and fuel should be included. Set aside a buffer for unexpected costs, often around ten percent.
Tracking costs and family support
Use a spreadsheet to record quotes, deposits and payments. If one category goes over budget, reduce spending elsewhere. Hidden costs include service charges, transport for vendors, overtime fees, tips, alterations and extra food for staff. Ask every vendor what is included in their quote and what may be added later. Family contributions and cash gifts can help, but do not rely on them to cover essential costs.
Review the budget monthly with your partner. A wedding budget is a series of choices. Couples who decide early what matters most usually end up spending less and enjoying the day more.
