The engagement ring gets the attention. The wedding band is the one you wear every day for the rest of your life. It deserves as much thought.
Choose the metal
Gold is the most popular choice. Yellow gold is traditional, while white and rose gold are fashionable. Gold purity is measured in karats: 24 karat is pure but soft, so rings are usually 18 karat or 14 karat, which are harder and more durable.
Platinum is dense, strong and naturally white, and it does not fade. It is more expensive than gold.
Titanium and tungsten are cheaper, strong and popular for men’s bands. They are difficult or impossible to resize, which matters if your finger size changes over the years.
Silver is affordable but softer and can tarnish. Some couples choose silver bands at first and upgrade later.
Matching or not
Couples do not need matching bands. Many choose the same metal in different styles, for example a plain band for him and a diamond-set band for her. What matters is that each person likes their ring.
With the engagement ring
If the bride will wear her engagement ring and wedding band together, choose a band that sits comfortably beside it. Some bands are curved or notched to fit around an engagement ring stone. Take the engagement ring when shopping.
Width and comfort
Bands come in different widths. Wider bands suit larger hands and are common for men. “Comfort fit” bands have a rounded inside, making them easier to wear all day.
Sizing
Get sized by a jeweller. Fingers swell in heat, so in West Africa’s climate, measure at a normal temperature, not first thing in the morning or after exercise. A ring should slide on with slight resistance and come off with a little effort.
Buying in Ghana and Nigeria
Buy from reputable jewellers and ask for a receipt that states the metal and karat. Gold should carry a hallmark or stamp showing its purity. Be careful with cheap “gold” rings in open markets, which may be plated.
Engraving
Many couples engrave the inside of their bands with the wedding date, initials or a Bible verse. Engraving is usually cheap and adds meaning.
Budget
Set a budget for both bands together, and remember that the band is worn daily, so durability matters more than trend.
The best test is simple: put it on and forget it is there. That is the ring you will still be wearing in thirty years.
