Some couples marry quickly, with little money and a small ceremony. Years later, with children grown and life more settled, they want to celebrate their marriage properly. A vow renewal gives them that chance.

A vow renewal is a ceremony at which a married couple reaffirm their promises to each other.

Why renew vows

Couples renew vows to mark milestones, such as 10, 25 or 50 years; to celebrate after overcoming hard times; or simply to celebrate with children and grandchildren who were not at the original wedding.

In church

In Ghana and Nigeria, many couples mark their silver jubilee, 25 years, or golden jubilee, 50 years, with a church thanksgiving service. The couple may exchange vows again, receive a blessing and hold a reception afterwards.

Who leads

A pastor, priest or respected elder usually leads. Some couples ask their children to play key roles, such as walking the couple down the aisle or giving speeches.

The vows

Couples can repeat their original vows or write new ones reflecting their journey together. Personal words about what the years have taught them can be moving for guests.

What to wear

Couples often wear matching outfits in traditional fabric, or formal attire. Some brides wear a gown; others choose elegant traditional dress. There are no fixed rules.

Keep it meaningful

A vow renewal should focus on the marriage, not become a costly second wedding. Some couples keep it small, with family and close friends, and others hold large celebrations. Both are fine.

Music

Many couples choose the songs from their original wedding, or songs that marked important moments in their marriage. A choir or a favourite highlife band can make the celebration feel personal.

Gifts

Guests sometimes bring gifts, but many couples ask for donations to a charity or church project instead.

Photos and memories

Displaying photos from the original wedding alongside family pictures from the years since is a simple way to tell the couple’s story.

Speeches

Children, friends and church members often share stories about the couple. Keep speeches short and warm, and let the couple speak last.

A promise kept

At a first wedding, the vows are hopes. At a vow renewal, they are a record. Guests can see what “for better, for worse” looks like after twenty-five years.
