The wedding is over. The couple is tired, the house is full of gifts and the WhatsApp groups are full of photos. There is one last job: saying thank you.
Why it matters
West African weddings depend on many people: families who contributed money and time, friends who planned and ran errands, church members who sang and prayed, and guests who travelled and gave gifts. A proper thank you honours that effort.
Families first
Visit or call both sets of parents and key relatives soon after the wedding. In many Ghanaian and Nigerian families, a formal visit or a thanksgiving service is expected. Take a small gift if possible.
The wedding party
Thank the bridesmaids, groomsmen and anyone who worked behind the scenes with a personal message and, if you can, a small gift. They gave up time and money for your day.
The church
Thank the officiating minister and the church. Many couples attend a thanksgiving service a week or two after the wedding and offer a gift to the church.
Guests
Send thank-you messages to guests who attended or sent gifts. Personal messages are best, mentioning the gift if possible. A group message on WhatsApp is acceptable for large weddings, but a personal note for close friends and elders shows extra care.
Some couples send printed thank-you cards with a wedding photo. Others share a video message on social media.
Vendors
Thank vendors who did good work: planner, caterer, decorator, photographer, MC, DJ. Write reviews online and recommend them to friends. It helps small businesses grow.
Timing
Aim to send thank-you messages within a few weeks. For guests who gave gifts after the wedding, respond soon after receiving them.
What to say
Keep it simple: “Thank you so much for celebrating with us and for the lovely gift. It meant a lot to have you there.” Add a personal touch where you can.
Divide the work
Share the job between the couple. Each can handle their own family and friends. Keep a list of gifts and who gave them to avoid missing anyone. Ask a trusted friend to note gift envelopes and presents as they arrive at the reception, so the list is ready when you need it.
People forget many details of a wedding. They remember whether the couple noticed what they did.
