High above the traffic, the noise of the city softens. The sky turns orange over the skyline, lights begin to flicker on below, and for a moment the busy city feels calm. Rooftops in Accra and Lagos, on hotels, restaurants and apartment buildings, have become popular spots for proposals. They offer something rare in crowded cities: open space, privacy and a view. With good planning, a rooftop proposal can feel both intimate and spectacular.

Choosing a rooftop and timing the sun

Hotel and restaurant rooftops are the easiest option because they are designed for guests. Some apartment buildings also have shared roof terraces. In Accra, areas such as Airport City, Osu and Cantonments have rooftop venues; in Lagos, Victoria Island and Ikoyi have several. Speak to the venue manager well in advance. Explain your plan and ask about booking a private area, decorations, music and photography rules. Some venues offer proposal packages.

In Ghana and Nigeria, the sun sets fairly quickly, usually between about six and half past six in the evening. Plan to arrive at least half an hour before sunset so you are settled before the best light.

Weather, safety and decorations

Rooftops are exposed to wind and rain. Check the forecast and ask the venue whether there is a covered area if the weather changes. Make sure the rooftop has proper railings and lighting. Avoid unofficial or unsafe roofs, however good the view. A dinner reservation is the easiest cover story. Ask the staff to seat you in the chosen spot or to lead you there at the right moment.

Candles, flowers and fairy lights work well as the sky darkens. Keep it simple so the view remains the focus.

Photographer, music and after the yes

A photographer can wait nearby, posing as another guest. Discuss positions so they capture both your faces and the skyline. A musician or a small speaker playing a meaningful song can set the mood, but check the venue’s rules on noise. Keep the ring secure in a pocket and avoid taking it out near the edge of the roof.

Plan a meal or a small celebration with friends waiting downstairs or at another table. A rooftop gives a proposal the whole city as a backdrop. Most couples remember the view only afterwards, once they have stopped looking at each other.
