For years, John Dumelo was one of the most talked-about bachelors in Ghanaian film. In May 2018, he married a law student most of his fans had never heard of.

The actor married Gifty Mawunya Nkornu in ceremonies in Accra, with their traditional wedding held at Spintex on 12 May 2018. Celebrities from Ghana’s film and music scenes attended, and photographs and videos from the day spread quickly across social media. In October 2018, the couple welcomed their first child.

Keeping it private

Dumelo, known for his roles in Ghanaian and Nigerian films since the mid-2000s, had kept his relationship with Mawunya out of the public eye until shortly before the wedding. When the news broke, much of the attention turned to who his bride was. Gifty Mawunya Nkornu, then studying law, was not a celebrity, and the couple chose to keep much of the planning private.

That approach, a relatively quiet build-up followed by a well-documented wedding, has become common among Ghanaian celebrities who want to share the day without living their whole relationship in public.

The traditional ceremony

The traditional wedding followed Ghanaian custom, with the groom’s family presenting the items requested by the bride’s family, prayers, and the formal acceptance. The couple wore coordinated traditional attire, and guests from the entertainment industry joined family members in celebrating. Friends and fellow actors shared clips from the event on Instagram, and the wedding trended in Ghana that weekend.

From actor to politician

Dumelo had long been involved in farming and business alongside acting, and he became active in politics with the National Democratic Congress. After an unsuccessful run in 2020, he won the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat in the December 2024 elections. In 2025 he was appointed a deputy minister for food and agriculture in President Mahama’s government.

His wife has appeared with him at political and public events, and the couple’s family life has been shared selectively with fans on social media.

What couples take from it

The Dumelo wedding showed that a celebrity wedding in Ghana did not need a months-long public campaign. A private engagement, a traditional ceremony with family at the centre, and carefully shared photographs were enough to make it one of the most talked-about weddings of the year.

The partner, not the platform

Many of the wedding’s most shared moments were not of the guests but of the couple themselves: the groom dancing, the bride’s outfit changes, the families together. Wedding planners often point to that as the lesson for any couple: the day is about the marriage, not the guest list.

In 2018 he was an actor getting married. By 2025 he was a minister of state. The wife who stood beside him at Spintex was beside him through both.
