The wedding cost more than expected, and the honeymoon fund is nearly empty. Many couples find themselves in this position. A honeymoon does not need to be a week in the Maldives to be special. Some of the best trips are short, simple and close to home.

Set a budget first

Decide how much you can spend before looking at destinations. Include transport, accommodation, food, activities and a buffer for surprises.

Stay local

Ghana and Nigeria have beautiful destinations within driving distance. In Ghana, couples can consider the Volta Region’s hills and waterfalls, the Western Region’s beaches, Cape Coast or Aburi. In Nigeria, Obudu Mountain Resort, Calabar and beach resorts near Lagos are popular.

Travel off-peak

Prices rise in December and during holidays. If your wedding is in a peak season, consider delaying the honeymoon by a few weeks or months.

Shorter trips

A three-night trip can feel just as meaningful as a long one. Focus on rest and time together.

Honeymoon funds

Some couples add a honeymoon fund to their gift registry, letting guests contribute towards flights or experiences.

Tell them you are newlyweds

Hotels sometimes offer upgrades, complimentary drinks or small gifts for honeymooners. Mention it when booking.

Book early

Flights and popular hotels get more expensive closer to the date. Book once your wedding date is set.

Packages

Some resorts offer honeymoon packages including meals and activities. Compare them carefully with booking separately.

A staycation

If travel is not possible, a few nights in a nice hotel in your own city, with phones switched off, can provide the rest and privacy couples need.

Plan a bigger trip later

Many couples take a modest honeymoon after the wedding and save for a bigger trip on their first anniversary.

Drive, don’t fly

Road trips can be cheaper than flights. In Ghana, a drive from Accra to the Volta Region or the Western Region takes a few hours. Plan stops, and avoid driving at night.

Free experiences

Walks on the beach, sunset picnics and visits to free sites can be as memorable as expensive tours.

Money talk

Agree in advance how much you will spend each day. Talking calmly about money on your honeymoon is good practice for married life.

The purpose of a honeymoon is to rest and begin married life together. That can happen in a beach hut as easily as in a five-star resort.
