Brides often plan their beauty routine for months. Grooms sometimes remember they need a haircut the day before. Yet the groom stands beside the bride in almost every photo. A little planning makes a big difference.

The haircut

Get a haircut a few days before the wedding, not the same morning. That gives time for any uneven lines or irritation to settle. Tell your barber it is for your wedding and agree the style in advance.

Beard or clean-shaven

If you have a beard, have it shaped by a professional a few days before. If you shave, do it carefully the night before or the morning of, using a fresh blade, to avoid cuts and bumps.

Skin

Start a simple routine weeks ahead: wash your face, moisturise and use sunscreen. On the day, blotting papers help with shine in the heat.

Hands and nails

Rings draw attention to hands. Trim and clean your nails, and consider a simple manicure. Moisturise dry hands.

Teeth and breath

Visit a dentist for a cleaning a few weeks before if you can. Keep mints handy on the day.

Fragrance

Choose a fragrance you like and wear it lightly. Hugging dozens of guests means everyone will notice it.

The outfit

Have your suit or traditional outfit fitted early, then tried on again the week before. Make sure shoes are comfortable and polished. Prepare socks, belt, cufflinks and any accessories the night before.

Traditional attire

If you are wearing kente, agbada or another traditional outfit, practise wearing it. Kente can be heavy, and knowing how to arrange it helps you move comfortably.

Staying fresh

Ghana’s heat is hard on outfits. Wear a breathable undershirt, carry a handkerchief and use antiperspirant. Have a fresh shirt ready if you are changing between ceremony and reception.

Rest

Avoid a late night before the wedding. Sleep, water and a good breakfast will show more in photos than any product.

The groomsmen

Make sure your groomsmen are also groomed and dressed on time. Share the dress code and arrival times with them, and consider booking a barber to visit everyone on the morning of the wedding.

Looking like yourself

The goal is not to transform yourself. It is to look like the best version of you, so your bride and your family recognise the man they know, only sharper.
