It happens at more weddings than people admit: the bride looks pale during the vows, or the groom sways at the altar. The cause is often simple. They have not eaten since the night before.
Why it happens
Wedding mornings are busy. Hair, makeup, photos, family visits and nerves leave little time for food. Some brides also skip meals to fit into a gown.
The risks
Low blood sugar and dehydration can cause dizziness, headaches, irritability and fainting, especially in Ghana’s heat and under heavy clothing.
Eat breakfast
Start the day with a proper breakfast that includes protein and slow-release carbohydrates, such as eggs, bread, oats or fruit. Avoid heavy, oily foods that may upset your stomach.
Drink water
Drink water steadily throughout the day. Keep a bottle with a straw nearby during makeup, to protect lipstick.
Snack between events
Pack easy snacks: nuts, fruit, biscuits or small sandwiches. Ask a bridesmaid or groomsman to make sure you eat between the ceremony and reception.
Plate at the reception
At the reception, couples are often busy greeting guests. Ask the caterer to serve you first and to pack a meal for later, in case you miss it.
Alcohol
If you drink alcohol, do so moderately and with food. Alcohol on an empty stomach, combined with heat and excitement, can make you unwell.
Nerves
If nerves make eating difficult, choose small, gentle foods and sip drinks slowly. Deep breaths and a few quiet minutes can help.
Traditional ceremonies
Long engagement ceremonies can last hours. Ask a relative to bring water and food discreetly, especially for the bride, who may be changing outfits and dancing.
Assign a food helper
Give one friend the job of making sure the couple eats and drinks. It sounds small, but it can save the day.
Eat the night before
Have a balanced dinner the evening before the wedding, and avoid very spicy or unfamiliar foods that might upset your stomach. Go to bed early and drink water before sleeping.
Groomsmen and bridesmaids
The bridal party needs food too. Arrange breakfast or snacks for everyone getting ready together, so no one is running on empty during photos.
Energy for the dance floor
Couples who eat well are the ones still dancing at the end of the night. The wedding day is long, and the best way to enjoy it is to treat your body kindly from the first hour.
