In December, Accra becomes a city of events. Diaspora Ghanaians fly home, concerts fill every weekend and families pack weddings into the weeks between Christmas and New Year. A December wedding means relatives from abroad can attend. It also means competing with half the city for venues, vendors and road space.

Why December

Many Ghanaians abroad take their annual leave over Christmas, so December gives couples the best chance of having family from London, Toronto or Houston present. The festive mood also adds to the celebration.

Book very early

Popular venues, photographers, caterers, decorators and DJs are booked months ahead for December. Book your key vendors as soon as you set the date, ideally nine to twelve months in advance.

Expect higher prices

Demand drives up prices in December, from venue hire to hotel rooms and car rentals. Flights to Ghana are also more expensive. Build this into your budget and warn guests early.

Traffic

Accra’s December traffic is notorious, especially near malls, beaches and event venues. Choose a venue that is easy to reach, or close to the ceremony site. Give guests realistic arrival times and plan transport for the bridal party.

Guests from abroad

Send save-the-dates early so diaspora guests can book flights and accommodation. Consider a room block at a hotel and share information about airport transfers, local SIM cards and mobile money for guests who are not used to Accra.

Competing events

Your guests may have several weddings, funerals, concerts and church events in the same week. Check major event dates, such as big concerts, before choosing your day.

Harmattan weather

December is the start of the Harmattan season, with dry, dusty winds from the Sahara and hazy skies. Mornings and nights can be cooler, but days are often hot. Dust can affect outdoor decor and photographs, so ask your photographer and decorator how they plan for it.

Christmas themes

Some couples add Christmas touches to decor, music and food. Others prefer to keep the wedding separate from the season. Either works, as long as the theme does not overwhelm the day.

Vendor reliability

Vendors juggling many December events can be stretched thin. Confirm arrangements several times in the final weeks and ask who exactly will attend your event.

A December wedding brings the whole family home. Plan it like a major event in a busy city, because in December, that is exactly what it is.
