The photographer leans in for the classic shot: the bride’s hand resting on the groom’s, rings gleaming in the light. That photo will be printed, framed and shared for decades. Chipped or clashing nails show up in every one.

Start with nail health

Healthy nails make any style look better. Start caring for your nails and cuticles a couple of months before the wedding. Moisturise, avoid biting and give acrylics a break if your natural nails need to recover.

Choose a style that suits you

Classic bridal choices include nude tones, soft pinks, French tips and milky whites. They match most dresses and photograph well. Brides who want more personality choose subtle glitter, chrome, small designs or a colour that matches the wedding palette.

Match your outfits

If you are wearing kente or a coloured outfit for the traditional engagement and a white gown for church, choose a nail colour that works with both, or plan a change between events.

Length and shape

Very long nails can make it hard to handle rings, dress fastenings, bouquets and phones. Medium length almond or oval shapes are popular because they are elegant and practical. Test the length before the day.

Book a trial

A nail trial, like a makeup trial, lets you see the result and check how long it lasts. Take photos in natural light and with flash.

Timing

Book your final appointment one or two days before the wedding. Gel or acrylic nails done too early may chip; done on the morning, they add stress to an already busy day. If you have a traditional engagement earlier in the week, ask your technician how to plan around both events.

Protect them

In the days before the wedding, avoid heavy cleaning, dishwashing without gloves and opening cans with your nails. Pack a small kit with a file, glue and nail colour for emergencies.

Don’t forget toes

If you are wearing open shoes or will dance barefoot, a matching pedicure finishes the look.

Gel, acrylic or natural

Gel polish lasts longer than regular polish and resists chipping for about two weeks, which makes it popular for brides. Acrylic extensions add length and strength but need skilled application and careful removal afterwards. Natural nails with regular polish are the cheapest option and easy to touch up, but they chip more quickly. Choose based on your lifestyle in the days before the wedding and on how long you want the look to last into the honeymoon.

Nails are a small detail in a big day. In the photo of the rings, they are the whole picture around them.
