The temperature drops as the road climbs out of Accra. By the time guests reach Aburi, in the Akuapem hills, the air is fresher and the views stretch across the plains towards the city. For couples who want a garden wedding without travelling far, Aburi has become one of Ghana’s most popular wedding destinations.
Where it is and the Botanical Gardens
Aburi is in the Eastern Region, about 40 kilometres north of Accra on the Aburi road. Depending on traffic, the drive takes about an hour. Aburi’s higher altitude makes it cooler than Accra, which is welcome for outdoor ceremonies. Mornings can be misty, and evenings can be chilly. The Aburi Botanical Gardens, opened in 1890, offer old trees, lawns and paths. They are popular for pre-wedding shoots and some ceremonies. Check permission and fees with the management.

Venues, travel and accommodation
Aburi and nearby towns have hotels, resorts and private gardens that host weddings. Many offer views over the valley. Arrange transport for guests from Accra, such as hired buses. Share clear directions and timings, and plan for traffic on the Aburi road. Some couples book rooms for close family and the bridal party in Aburi hotels, so they can stay the night after the celebration.
Weather, vendors and budget
Rain is common in the wet seasons. Have tents or an indoor backup ready. Many Accra vendors work in Aburi, but they may charge transport fees. Confirm early. The hills, gardens and mist make beautiful backdrops. Plan time for photos in the best light. Aburi is in Akuapem territory, and some couples include local customs or honour the area’s traditions.
Costs can be similar to Accra, but transport and accommodation add up. Factor them into your budget.
Getting there and permits
Leave early from Accra, especially on Saturdays, as traffic on the Madina and Aburi roads can be heavy. Hired buses with a set departure time help guests arrive together. Warn guests that evenings can be cool and suggest a light wrap or jacket. Some couples serve local dishes or fruits from the Eastern Region at their receptions.
Ask about permits. Aburi offers something Accra cannot: a cool breeze and a long view. For many couples, that alone is worth the drive up the hill.
