It sounds romantic: your partner blows out the candles, and you go down on one knee. Many people consider proposing on a birthday because it is already a day of celebration, with friends and family gathered. But some partners would rather keep their birthday and their engagement separate. Before planning a birthday proposal, it helps to think carefully about what your partner would want.

Why birthdays and the risks

A birthday is a natural time for gifts and surprises, so a ring box is less likely to raise suspicion. Friends and family may already be together, making it easy to share the moment. Some people feel that a proposal on their birthday takes attention away from the birthday itself. In future years, the two celebrations may merge into one, and some partners dislike that.

Think about how your partner feels about birthdays. If they love being celebrated for themselves, a proposal on another day may be better. If they enjoy big shared moments, a birthday could be ideal.

Public or private and planning

A birthday party offers an audience, but not everyone wants to be proposed to in front of a crowd. Consider proposing privately earlier in the day and announcing the news at the party. Some people propose on the eve of a birthday or a few days later, keeping the moment close to the birthday without sharing the date.

If you go ahead, plan carefully. Coordinate with whoever is organising the party so the proposal fits into the programme without confusion. In many Ghanaian and Nigerian families, asking for the blessing of the partner’s family before proposing is expected. Make sure this is done before the big day.

Gifts, photos and a backup

Decide whether the ring is the birthday present or whether you will give a separate gift. Some partners appreciate both. A photographer or a trusted friend with a camera can capture the moment, especially if it happens in front of guests. If you sense your partner is having a difficult birthday, be ready to postpone. A proposal should add to the day, not compete with it.

A birthday proposal works best when the person being asked would have chosen that date themselves. If you are unsure, the other 364 days of the year are still available.
