Out on the water, the noise of the city falls away. The boat slows, the sun sinks towards the hills, and for a few minutes there is nobody around but the two of you and a discreet crew. For couples in Ghana and Nigeria, a boat proposal offers something hard to find on land: privacy with a view. With careful planning, it can be one of the most memorable ways to ask the question.

Choosing the water and the operator

In Ghana, the Volta Lake around Akosombo is a popular choice, with resorts and boat operators offering cruises. In Lagos, boats run on the lagoon and along the coast, with views of the city skyline. Other options include river cruises and lagoon trips near Ada. Book with a reputable operator who has life jackets, a trained crew and a working engine. Ask about the size of the boat, the route and how long the trip lasts. A private hire gives you the most control.

Safety and timing

Insist on life jackets for everyone on board, even if you plan to stay seated. Check the weather forecast and avoid going out in storms or rough water. Let a friend know your plans.

Late afternoon and sunset are the most popular times for the light. Plan the moment so that you are in a calm, scenic spot rather than still leaving the dock.

The ring, the crew and the photographer

A ring dropped overboard is gone. Keep it in a secure pocket or box and only take it out when you are ready. Some people tie the box to a ribbon for safety. Brief the crew in advance so they know when to slow down, stop the engine or give you space. Some operators can add decorations, music or a small meal.

A photographer can travel on the boat or follow in a second boat. Discuss angles and lighting beforehand so they are ready at the right moment.

Seasickness and celebrating

Consider whether your partner is comfortable on water. If they get seasick or are afraid of water, a lakeside proposal on land may be kinder. Plan what happens after the proposal, such as dinner at a lakeside restaurant or a surprise gathering of family and friends at the dock. Prices vary with boat size, duration and extras. Get a clear quote in advance and confirm what is included.

On the water, there is nowhere for either of you to rush off to. That is the point of proposing there, and it is worth planning the moment as carefully as the boat.
