The ring is on, the families know, and friends want to celebrate. Many couples now host an engagement party, a relaxed gathering to mark the news before the serious planning begins. In Ghana and Nigeria, where traditional ceremonies already involve families, couples need to think about how a party fits in.

What it is and when to hold it

An engagement party is a celebration of the couple’s decision to marry. It is usually less formal than the wedding and can be held at home, in a restaurant or at a small venue. The knocking ceremony and traditional marriage are formal family events with set customs. An engagement party is a social celebration, often focused on friends. Some couples hold both; others skip the party.

Engagement parties are usually held a few weeks to a few months after the proposal, giving time to plan but before wedding preparations become intense.

Hosts, guests and budget

Traditionally, the bride’s parents might host, but today couples often host themselves, or friends organise it. Invite people who are likely to be invited to the wedding. Inviting someone to the engagement party and not the wedding can cause awkwardness. Keep it simple. Food, drinks and music are enough. Save the big spending for the wedding.

A home, garden, restaurant or lounge works well. Choose somewhere that suits your guest numbers. Some couples share the story of the proposal, show photos or play games. A short toast from a friend or family member adds warmth.

Gifts, theme and thanking guests

Gifts are not usually expected at engagement parties, though some guests bring small presents. Avoid asking for gifts. A simple theme or colour can make the party feel special. Let guests know the dress code. Ask a friend or hire a photographer to capture the event. The photos can be used later for save-the-dates. Do not let the engagement party become a second wedding. It should be a fun break before the planning begins.

Keep speeches short. Send thanks. An engagement party is the first time many friends meet as one group around the couple. Done simply, it can be the start of the community that will carry them to the wedding day.
