Walk into a bridal preparation room in Accra or Lagos and you may see several wigs on stands: one for the engagement, one for the church and one for the reception. Wigs and hair units have become a popular way for brides to change looks quickly and protect their natural hair.
Why brides choose wigs
Wigs allow dramatic styles without heat damage or long hours of braiding. They make outfit changes easier and let brides try styles that would be difficult with their natural hair.
Frontal units
A frontal wig has a lace section across the front hairline, from ear to ear, allowing flexible parting and a natural-looking hairline when installed well.
Closure units
A closure unit has a smaller lace section, usually at the top of the head. It is often easier to maintain and can be more comfortable for long days.
Custom units
Many stylists create custom units to match a bride’s head size, preferred density and style. Custom work takes time, so order early.
Human hair or synthetic
Human hair wigs look more natural and can be styled with heat, but cost more. Good synthetic wigs are cheaper and hold styles well, but may react badly to heat.
Choosing a stylist
Look at the stylist’s previous bridal work, especially close-up photos of hairlines. Ask about installation methods, glue or glueless options, and how long the install will last.
Timing
Buy or order your wig well in advance. Do a trial install alongside your makeup trial, so you can see the complete look.
Matching the look
Consider your gown’s neckline, your veil or headpiece and the traditional outfit. A veil needs a style that can hold it securely; a gele works best with certain hairstyles underneath.
Comfort in the heat
Wigs can get hot. Choose breathable caps, avoid excessive glue on sensitive skin and keep blotting papers handy. Some brides switch to a lighter unit for the reception.
Protect your natural hair
Prepare your natural hair with braids or cornrows under the wig, and follow a care routine before and after the wedding to avoid breakage.
Your hair, your choice
Some brides wear natural hair proudly; others love the freedom of wigs; many do both across the celebrations. The best choice is the one that lets the bride feel like herself on the day.
