A few weeks before the wedding, the bride’s friends gather for an afternoon of food, games and advice. The groom’s friends plan a night out. Pre-wedding parties have become part of many West African weddings.
The bridal shower
A bridal shower is traditionally a gathering of the bride’s female friends and relatives, who bring gifts, often for the home. In Ghana and Nigeria, showers range from quiet brunches to themed parties with decorations, games and dress codes.
Many showers include a time of advice, when married women share wisdom about marriage. Some Christian brides hold a prayer session as part of the event.
Ideas for a shower
Brunch or lunch at a restaurant or home, a spa day, a picnic, a cooking class, or a games afternoon. Popular games include quizzes about the couple and wedding bingo. Keep the tone suitable for the bride and her values.
The bachelor party
The groom’s friends often organise a bachelor party, sometimes called a stag night. Options range from dinner and games to a weekend trip, football, go-karting or a beach outing.
Keep it respectful
Western-style bachelor parties sometimes involve heavy drinking or activities that could embarrass the groom or upset the bride and families. Plan events that the groom would be comfortable with his future in-laws knowing about. Consider faith and family expectations.
Timing
Hold the parties at least a week or two before the wedding, not the night before. Tired and hungover couples do not make good wedding photos.
Who pays?
Traditionally, the organisers, often the maid of honour or best man, plan and pay, with contributions from friends. Agree on costs early and keep them reasonable, especially for friends who are already spending on outfits and gifts.
Combined parties
Some couples hold a joint party, with both sets of friends together. This is increasingly common and can be a relaxed way for friends to meet before the wedding.
Gifts
Shower gifts are usually practical: kitchen items, linens, lingerie or personal care. Some couples create a small registry.
Photos and social media
Ask the bride or groom before posting photos. Not everyone wants their shower or bachelor party on Instagram.
These parties are a chance for friends to say goodbye to single life and welcome a new season. Done well, they build memories without leaving regrets.
