Most couples in Accra now do a pre-wedding shoot. The photos end up on invitations, social media announcements and the big screen at the reception. Where you shoot decides how they look.
1. Jamestown
The red-and-white lighthouse, colourful fishing boats, peeling colonial walls and busy streets of Jamestown give photos texture and history. Go early in the morning. Be respectful of residents, and expect some people to ask for a small payment to appear in photos or for permission to shoot near their homes.
2. Aburi Botanical Gardens
About an hour north of Accra, the gardens offer big trees, lawns and cooler weather. It is ideal for romantic, natural shots. There is an entry fee, and photographers may be charged for professional shoots.
3. Labadi and the beaches
Beach shoots at sunset are popular. Labadi Beach is busy, so some couples prefer quieter beaches further along the coast toward Kokrobite or at private resorts. Plan around tides and wind.
4. University of Ghana, Legon
The campus has traditional-style halls, courtyards and tree-lined roads. Many couples who studied there go back for sentimental shots. Check the university’s rules on professional photography.
5. Independence Square and the Arch
The Black Star Gate and the square’s open space make striking backgrounds, especially with kente outfits. Some state sites may require permission for professional shoots, so check first.
6. Airport City and modern Accra
For a sleek, urban look, the glass buildings and wide streets of Airport City and new developments work well. Evening lights make good backdrops.
7. Art galleries and hotels
Galleries and boutique hotels often allow shoots for a fee. They offer controlled lighting, clean interiors and an escape from the heat.
Practical tips
Timing. Shoot early morning or late afternoon for soft light and less heat. Avoid midday.
Outfits. Bring two or three looks: a traditional outfit, a casual look and something formal. Coordinate colours with your wedding theme.
Permits. Ask your photographer about location fees and permits before the day.
Weather. Have a rain plan during the rainy season.
Comfort. Bring water, snacks, a small makeup kit and flat shoes for walking between spots.
Traffic. Accra traffic can swallow the best light. Limit yourself to two locations close together.
The best photos come from couples who relax. Choose a place that means something to you both, and the camera will pick that up.
