Mercy Chinwo married Pastor Blessed Uzochikwa three times in ten days: at a court in Lagos, at a traditional ceremony in Port Harcourt, and in church the next day.
The gospel singer, known across Africa for “Excess Love”, and the pastor held their court wedding in Lagos on 4 August 2022. The traditional wedding followed on 12 August in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and the church wedding on 13 August, also in Port Harcourt. Their fans, many of them church members across Nigeria and Ghana, followed every stage online.
Two cultures
The bride is from Rivers State, of Ikwerre heritage, and the groom’s family is from Delta State. At the traditional wedding, the couple honoured both, wearing outfits that reflected the bride’s Ikwerre roots and the groom’s Delta traditions. The mix of attire, beads and colours became one of the most shared parts of the celebration.
The pre-wedding
The couple announced their engagement with pre-wedding photos that spread widely in mid-2022. Fans of Chinwo’s music, which is sung in many churches, reacted with excitement, and the hashtag for the wedding trended in Nigerian gospel circles.
A gospel wedding
The church wedding carried a strong worship element, fitting for a gospel artist and a pastor. Friends from the gospel music community attended and ministered. For many Christian couples, the wedding showed how to celebrate with joy and style while keeping faith at the centre.
After the wedding
Chinwo became known as Mercy Chinwo-Blessed, and the couple have continued to share moments from their marriage, including anniversary messages. In 2025, they marked their third anniversary with a vintage-themed photo shoot that fans shared widely.
What couples take from it
Plan the legal part separately. Many Nigerian and Ghanaian couples complete the court or registry wedding before the big ceremonies, which removes pressure from the main days.
Honour both families. When couples come from different ethnic groups, blending attire, food and customs can make both families feel included.
Keep the purpose clear. For couples of faith, planning the church ceremony around worship and prayer, before thinking about the reception, keeps the focus where they want it.
Staggered weddings
The three-stage pattern, court, traditional and church, is now common among West African couples. It spreads costs and emotions over several days, and it lets each ceremony have its own character.
Her best-known song is about a love that goes beyond measure. Her wedding took three ceremonies across two cities to contain it.
